Abstract
The Himalayan region, often referred to as the "Water Tower of Asia," supplies freshwater to nearly two billion people through major river systems such as the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra. However, climate change has significantly altered precipitation patterns, accelerated glacier retreat, increased the frequency of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and intensified droughts and floods. These environmental changes threaten water availability, agricultural productivity, hydropower generation, biodiversity, and socio-economic development.
This review synthesizes recent scientific findings on the impacts of climate change on Himalayan water resources, evaluates current adaptation strategies, and discusses future policy directions for sustainable water resource management. The study highlights integrated watershed management, community-based adaptation, climate-resilient infrastructure, glacier monitoring, ecosystem restoration, and transboundary water governance as key strategies for ensuring long-term water sustainability. Future perspectives emphasize the integration of remote sensing, artificial intelligence, climate modeling, and participatory governance to strengthen resilience against climate-induced water challenges.
